2nd March 2025<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone from lifelong speakers and enthusiastic learners to those curious about the language and Scottish culture are being encouraged to get involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Events which showcase how the language&nbsp;<strong>builds connections<\/strong>, marking this year\u2019s theme \u2013&nbsp;<strong>Ceanglaichean gun Chr\u00ecch<\/strong>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/handsupfortrad\/ceanglaichean-gun-chrich?si=b6061c133fea49a5a85416c3a6a7d932&amp;utm_source=clipboard&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=social_sharing\">pronounced&nbsp;<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/handsupfortrad\/ceanglaichean-gun-chrich?si=b6061c133fea49a5a85416c3a6a7d932&amp;utm_source=clipboard&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=social_sharing\"><em>kyeh-lee<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/handsupfortrad\/ceanglaichean-gun-chrich?si=b6061c133fea49a5a85416c3a6a7d932&amp;utm_source=clipboard&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=social_sharing\"><strong><em>ch<\/em><\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/handsupfortrad\/ceanglaichean-gun-chrich?si=b6061c133fea49a5a85416c3a6a7d932&amp;utm_source=clipboard&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=social_sharing\"><em>-un gun chree<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/handsupfortrad\/ceanglaichean-gun-chrich?si=b6061c133fea49a5a85416c3a6a7d932&amp;utm_source=clipboard&amp;utm_medium=text&amp;utm_campaign=social_sharing\"><strong><em>ch<\/em><\/strong><\/a>), are set to take place around the world, from Barra to Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With&nbsp;more than 170,000 people stating they have \u201csome skills in Gaelic\u201d or are able to understand or speak the language in the last Scottish census; a growing number of speakers in urban areas and cities; and two million worldwide signed up to learn Gaelic on Duolingo, the language continues to grow in popularity and prevalence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organised to connect communities, spark conversations, and inspire the next generation of Gaelic speakers, the week promises a packed schedule filled with music performances, storytelling sessions, workshops and discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 100 activities globally are expected to champion the resilience and vibrancy of Gaelic as living language for this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hundreds of schoolchildren across the country will take part in daily online workshops led by&nbsp;<strong>Seachdain na G\u00e0idhlig.&nbsp;<\/strong>While&nbsp;<strong>Say a Gaelic Phrase Day<\/strong>&nbsp;on&nbsp;<strong>Thursday 27th February<\/strong>&nbsp;will&nbsp;allow anyone around the world to have a crack at speaking Gaelic on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as the 60 groups across Scotland and beyond awarded funding through&nbsp;the initiative\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Small Grants Fund,&nbsp;<\/strong>supported by&nbsp;<strong>B\u00f2rd na G\u00e0idhlig,&nbsp;<\/strong>to stage events and activities, hundreds more individuals, businesses and organisations are planning their own events to mark the occasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a night geared towards&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/seachdainnagaidhlig.scot\/event\/oidhche-sa-phark-bar-evening-in-the-park-bar\/\">Gaelic speakers in The Park Bar<\/a>&nbsp;(Glasgow) and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/seachdainnagaidhlig.scot\/event\/deirdre-graham-workshop\/\">Gaelic song workshop led by Deirdre Graham<\/a>&nbsp;in Applecross, to an online&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/seachdainnagaidhlig.scot\/event\/meorachadh-sa-ghaidhlig-mindfulness-in-gaelic\/2025-02-28\/\">Gaelic mindfulness session<\/a>&nbsp;and a celebratory&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/seachdainnagaidhlig.scot\/event\/ceilidh-mhor-na-gaidhlig-sa-western\/\">ceilidh on Mull<\/a>, there is something for everyone across the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig&nbsp;<\/strong>Gaelic college on the Isle of Skye is hosting a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smo.uhi.ac.uk\/events-courses\/gaelic-t-shirt-day-2025\/?lang=en\">Gaelic T-Shirt Day<\/a>&nbsp;on 26th February, while the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scottishstorytellingcentre.online.red61.co.uk\/event\/913:5875\/913:25406\/\"><strong>Scottish Storytelling Centre<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>is hosting a Gaelic Songs and Stories Workshop. In Edinburgh,&nbsp;<strong>The<\/strong><strong>National Library of Scotland<\/strong>&nbsp;welcomes an evening of music and song from six-piece Gaelic band&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nls.uk\/whats-on\/amadan\/\">Amadan<\/a>, a creative writing session on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nls.uk\/whats-on\/creative-writing-uncovering-queer-gaelic-voices\/\">Uncovering Queer Gaelic Voices in Gaelic<\/a>, and a play featuring&nbsp;primary 7 pupils from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nls.uk\/whats-on\/school-play\">Bun-sgoil Taobh na P\u00e0irc<\/a>&nbsp;who will tell the story of the Highland Clearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In South America,&nbsp;<strong>Gaelic Argentina<\/strong>&nbsp;is staging&nbsp;<strong>Buenos Aires Ga\u00e8lica&nbsp;<\/strong>\u2013 a celebration marking 200 years since Gaelic settlers arrived in Buenos Aires and highlighting the language\u2019s global footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will also be the return of the much-loved Gaelic Meme Machine competition on Facebook. Previously announced events funded by&nbsp;<strong>Bord na G\u00e0idhlig&nbsp;<\/strong>include a tie up between Gaelic singer&nbsp;<strong>Mischa Macpherson<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Refuweegee,&nbsp;<\/strong>while elsewhere&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org\/gaidhlig\/seachdain-na-gaidhlig\/\"><strong>Keep Scotland Beautiful<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepscotlandbeautiful.org\/gaidhlig\/seachdain-na-gaidhlig\/\"><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a>are hosting a series of activities around Gaelic place names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Individuals, schools, community groups and organisations with any level of Gaelic can still register to host&nbsp;an activity in their community that promotes the language and builds connections. Events can be added to the World Gaelic Week website at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/seachdainnagaidhlig.scot\/events\/community\/add\/\">seachdainnagaidhlig.scot\/events\/community\/add<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Joy Dunlop, Director of Seachdain na G\u00e0idhlig, said:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u201cGaelic is a relevant, exciting language with an invaluable place in Scotland today. Seachdain na G\u00e0idhlig aims to further promote its use and demonstrate its richness, relevance and importance to our everyday lives. Most of all, language is a connector and this year we\u2019re inviting everyone from around the world to connect with home, with one another, with something new and experience World Gaelic Week in whichever way works for them. The wait is nearly over for this year\u2019s celebration and we plan on making it our most successful to date.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes said:<\/strong>&nbsp;\u201cEach year Seachdain na G\u00e0idhlig demonstrates the dynamism and innovation of Gaelic culture. Within just a few years it has grown to become a key event within the language\u2019s calendar \u2013 illustrating the demand for Gaelic which exists across Scotland and the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s theme of Ceanglaichean gun Chr\u00ecch speaks to the essential truth that language is something which unites us and opens our horizons \u2013 a point ably demonstrated by the diverse schedule of events being offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI look forward to engaging with Seachdain na G\u00e0idhlig and seeing it continue to build on its ongoing success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organised by Scottish traditional culture and music organisation&nbsp;<strong>Hands Up For Trad<\/strong>, with support from&nbsp;<strong>B\u00f2rd na G\u00e0idhlig<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Seachdain na G\u00e0idhlig&nbsp;<\/strong>was inspired by the success of other minority language initiatives such as Seachtain na Gaeilge in Ireland and M\u00ecos nan G\u00e0idheal in Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The week-long celebration gives Scottish Gaelic speakers, learners and supporters the opportunity to celebrate the language at home and internationally and drives national recognition and awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seachdain na G\u00e0idhlig 2025<\/strong>&nbsp;will take place from&nbsp;<strong>24th February &#8211; 2nd March 2025<\/strong>.
