Ullapool will host F\u00e8is Rois\u2019 five-day residential traditional music event for young people once again next month, with a tutor team featuring some of Scotland\u2019s top traditional musicians from bands including M\u00e0nran, RANT, Treacherous Orchestra and FARA.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking place in the October holidays, the Youth F\u00e8is (Gaelic word for festival) will run from Monday 21st \u2013 Friday 25th October, and young people from P4 through to S6 can choose to participate in a range of daily music classes including various musical instruments, Gaelic song, step dance and art. There is also a packed programme of evening activities, c\u00e8ilidhs and concerts. The event is open to everyone from complete beginners through to advanced players and singers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tutors this year include M\u00e0nran fiddle player, piper and singer,\u00a0Ewen\u00a0Henderson;<\/strong>\u00a0Arran fiddle player,\u00a0Gillian Frame,<\/strong>\u00a0who plays with RANT,\u00a0who played in Ullapool earlier this year; Assynt piano player and BBC Radio\u00a0Scotland Traditional Musician of the\u00a0Year Finalist,\u00a0Rory Matheson<\/strong>,\u00a0who\u00a0also plays with FARA; BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards winner,\u00a0Rachel Newton;<\/strong>\u00a0multi-instrumentalist,\u00a0Innes Watson<\/strong>; accordionist and piper,\u00a0Mairearad Green<\/strong>; fiddle\u00a0players\u00a0Anne Wood<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Gillian Stevenson<\/strong>; musician,\u00a0singer and artist,\u00a0Kim\u00a0Richards<\/strong>; piper\u00a0Ailis Sutherland<\/strong>; and step-dancer\u00a0Sophie\u00a0Stephenson<\/strong>.\u00a0Charlotte Mackenzie<\/strong>\u00a0from the\u00a0Arts in Nature project will lead art workshops throughout the week commented: \u201cWe are looking\u00a0forward to another five-day residential week in Ullapool next month and we are delighted\u00a0to have a team of fantastic tutors, many of whom are former participants\u00a0themselves\u00a0and we hope that this will inspire the next generation of\u00a0traditional musicians. Kim Richards, Mairearad Green and Rory Matheson are all\u00a0former Ullapool High School pupils, where we will hold the event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith classes in fiddle, guitar, Gaelic song, art, pipes and chanter, whistle, ukulele, keyboard, accordion, song-writing, group work, and step dance, we hope there is something for everyone –  it is a great opportunity to try an instrument for the first time. This year we have a brand new class, Global music, with Anne Wood, which will be a great opportunity for young musicians to learn music from different cultures around the world. Ullapool-based Anne recently toured her show, When Mountains Meet, which featured a live score of Scottish and South Asian music, and we can\u2019t wait to share traditional music from other cultures with our participants.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

F\u00e8is Rois strives to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to attend F\u00e8is Rois classes and residential events and have made it possible for people to pay for places in instalments, whilst there may also be support for lower income families from the Highland Children\u2019s Trust. Christian added: \u201cThe five-day residential F\u00e8is is a great opportunity for young people who are working towards achieving their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award as it is a requirement of that award to participate in a four-night and five-day residential. Also, through our weekly classes programme, we provide opportunities for young people to continue to develop their skills after the F\u00e8is week in Ullapool. Our weekly classes take place in Dingwall, and we have fiddle, accordion, guitar and clarsach classes, for all ages and abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
