{"id":12426,"date":"2018-12-02T04:59:19","date_gmt":"2018-12-02T04:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/?p=12426"},"modified":"2018-12-04T13:49:48","modified_gmt":"2018-12-04T13:49:48","slug":"winners-announced-for-mg-alba-scots-trad-music-awards-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/winners-announced-for-mg-alba-scots-trad-music-awards-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Winners Announced for MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3915\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/scotstradmusicawards\/files\/2018\/12\/img_3937-300x184.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"184\">Hands up for Trad celebrates Scotland\u2019s&nbsp;vibrant&nbsp;traditional music scene with a&nbsp;staggering&nbsp;20 awards&nbsp;announced&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Produced&nbsp;by Hands Up for Trad&nbsp;and a&nbsp;staple&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;Scottishmusic calendar,&nbsp;the&nbsp;ceremony&nbsp;was&nbsp;broadcast live on BBC ALBA and BBC Radio Scotland&nbsp;this evening, as well as being streamed worldwide.&nbsp;The&nbsp;event&nbsp;saw an abundance&nbsp;of music fans and industry&nbsp;gather&nbsp;in Perth, Scotland for an evening of recognition and foot-stomping&nbsp;live&nbsp;performances.&nbsp;Hosted&nbsp;by world-renowned Gaelic singer, Mary Ann Kennedy&nbsp;and award-winning musician, Kim Carnie,&nbsp;the evening&nbsp;champions&nbsp;Scottish music,&nbsp;heritage and tradition.<\/p>\n<p>Guests&nbsp;were treated to outstanding live&nbsp;sets&nbsp;some of Scotland\u2019s most exciting trad artists.&nbsp;M\u00e0nran&nbsp;brought the crowd to their feet followed by artists flying the flag for&nbsp;Scottish traditional musicincluding&nbsp;Hannah Rarity,&nbsp;Gordon Duncan Experience, David Kennedy Scottish Dance Band,&nbsp;Eabhal, Isobel Anne Martin and&nbsp;Mr&nbsp;Mcfall\u2019s&nbsp;Chamber,&nbsp;Kinnaris,&nbsp;Gerda Stevenson,&nbsp;KarinePolwart&nbsp;Trio,&nbsp;Gaelic rapper&nbsp;Griogair&nbsp;Labhruidh&nbsp;and&nbsp;Croft No Five.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Belhaven Bursary for Innovation<\/strong>&nbsp;in&nbsp;Scottish&nbsp;Music&nbsp;in association with&nbsp;Showcase Scotland Expo,&nbsp;supports the&nbsp;winner&nbsp;to progress unique ideas and empower creation. Financially matched only by the Mercury Prize, the prestigious fund of \u00a325,000 was awarded to&nbsp;<strong>Talisk<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Martin Hadden, a member of internationally renowned Scots band Silly Wizard and founder at Birnam CD&nbsp;presented the&nbsp;<strong>Album of the Year<\/strong> Award&nbsp;to musician&nbsp;<strong>Duncan Chisholm<\/strong>&nbsp;for his&nbsp;album,&nbsp;Sandwood. Chisholm&nbsp;also picked up the award for&nbsp;Composer of The Year.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Community&nbsp;Project of the Year<\/strong>&nbsp;went to&nbsp;<strong>Care for a&nbsp;Ceilidh<\/strong>, ascheme for Gaelic singers and traditional musicians who provide short concerts to residents of hospices and care homes<\/p>\n<p><strong>Club of the Year&nbsp;<\/strong>went to<strong>&nbsp;Partick&nbsp;Folk Club<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;recognise&nbsp;their contribution to the preservation&nbsp;and progression of traditional music.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gaelic&nbsp;Singer of the Year<\/strong>&nbsp;was awarded to&nbsp;<strong>Eilidh&nbsp;Cormack<\/strong>, a talented artist who is also a&nbsp;columnist, an audio archivist at Digital Archive of Scottish Gaelic and a tutor at&nbsp;F\u00e8isgoil&nbsp;who deliver language, music, arts and cultural services to schools and&nbsp;community&nbsp;groups. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The&nbsp;Up and Coming Artist of The Year<\/strong>&nbsp;is&nbsp;an&nbsp;award that&nbsp;exists to discover the next generation of folk acts.&nbsp;The recipient was new folk trio,&nbsp;<strong>Assynt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to their list of&nbsp;Trad&nbsp;Award accolades,&nbsp;neo-trad quintet&nbsp;<strong>Elephant Sessions<\/strong>&nbsp;picked up the award for&nbsp;<strong>Live Act of the Year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;sought-after&nbsp;<strong>Citty&nbsp;Finlayson Scots Singer of the Year<\/strong>&nbsp;sponsored by Traditional Music and Song Association went to&nbsp;<strong>Iona Fyfe<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Folk Band of the Year<\/strong>&nbsp;went to Gaelic supergroup,&nbsp;<strong>Daimh<\/strong>&nbsp;who won the same award back in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The evening also included&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;exclusive recognitions including&nbsp;<strong>Services to Gaelic<\/strong> sponsored by B\u00f2rd na G\u00e0idhlig,&nbsp;where&nbsp;Scottish Celtic rock band&nbsp;<strong>Runrig<\/strong>&nbsp;were praised.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>Hamish&nbsp;Henderson&nbsp;Services&nbsp;to&nbsp;Traditional&nbsp;Music Award<\/strong>&nbsp;was presented&nbsp;to <strong>Pete Shepheard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The evening continued through to&nbsp;the early&nbsp;hours&nbsp;with&nbsp;the Bob Turner&nbsp;Ceilidh&nbsp;Band&nbsp;and The House of Song led by Doris&nbsp;Rougvie.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHands Up for Trad\u2019s Creative Director Simon Thoumire said:&nbsp;\u201c<em>What&nbsp;another great year of Scottish trad music! There is so much vitality in the scene right now and it is only getting stronger.
