Sabhal M\u00f2r Ostaig<\/a> are delighted to introduce the talented John Somerville to their Short Courses programme with this brand new course Learning to play accordion, which is aimed at first time learners and will introduce course participants to the basics of the instrument in a fun and interactive way.<\/p>\n

Whether a complete beginner or someone who has been learning for a short time, John will break down the basic concepts of accordion playing – right hand technique, left hand technique and the bellows into easy bite size chunks. \u00a0The course is designed to be comfortable for both ear and sheet music learners and will concentrate on simple and easy to learn material to gain confidence in the instrument.\u00a0 There will be an opportunity to perform as a group some of the new tunes and skills learnt at the informal Thursday night c\u00e8ilidh.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s only space for a maximum of 7 people on this course and participants are expected to bring their own instrument.<\/p>\n

Accordionist\u00a0John Somerville <https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/johhsomervillemusic\/<\/a>>\u00a0is one of the current crop of exciting musicians to emerge form Scotland’s vibrant Folk scene.\u00a0 He has gained a reputation for pushing folk music’s \u00a0boundaries whilst remaining true to his native roots. \u00a0 Hailing from \u00a0Loch Ness, John has drawn influences from far and wide – from Highland and West coast music through to Border and piping traditions, Ceilidh music, European Folk and contemporary\u00a0dance music.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0His current musical itinerary includes playing with supergroup\u00a0Treacherous Orchestra <www.treacherousorchestra.com<\/a>>,\u00a0Cask Strength Ceilidh Band <www.caskstrengthmusic.com<\/a>>\u00a0and along with outstanding fiddler Adam Sutherland. \u00a0John\u2019s experience as a musician has seen him work with a host of bands and acts both big and small including David Byrne,\u00a0Salsa Celtica <https:\/\/salsaceltica.com\/<\/a>>,\u00a0Franz Ferdinand <http:\/\/franzferdinand.com\/<\/a>>,\u00a0Session A9 <http:\/\/sessiona9.com\/<\/a>>, Babelfish and Croft No Five.<\/p>\n

John now lives in Glasgow and is in demand as a teacher, performer, arranger and composer. \u00a0In teaching and education he has actively worked with many organisations including the\u00a0Royal Conservatoire of Scotland <https:\/\/www.rcs.ac.uk\/<\/a>>,\u00a0F\u00e8isean Nan G\u00e0idheal <www.feisean.org\/en\/<\/a>>,\u00a0University of the Highlands and Islands <https:\/\/www.uhi.ac.uk\/<\/a>>,\u00a0Falkirk Traditional Music Project <http:\/\/ymifalkirktrad.primaryblogger.co.uk\/<\/a>>\u00a0and\u00a0Celtic Connections <www.celticconnections.com\/Pages\/default.aspx<\/a>>\u00a0festival. \u00a0John was nominated for \u201ctutor of the year\u201d at the\u00a02016 MG Alba Traditional Music Awards <https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/handsupfortrad\/<\/a>>\u00a0and his recent composition \u201cThe Voyage of the Hector <http:\/\/feisrois.org.uk\/?lang=gdl&location=news<\/a>>\u201d (which was commissioned by F\u00e8is R\u00f2is)\u00a0has been performed by over five hundred teenagers and adults in Scotland, England, Australia and Cape Breton.<\/p>\n
