
{"id":2026,"date":"2015-09-08T17:05:58","date_gmt":"2015-09-08T16:05:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/folkwaves\/?p=2026"},"modified":"2015-09-08T17:05:58","modified_gmt":"2015-09-08T16:05:58","slug":"rura-hit-the-road-for-uk-tour-after-globetrotting-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/folkwaves\/rura-hit-the-road-for-uk-tour-after-globetrotting-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"RURA hit the road for UK tour, after globetrotting summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/folkwaves\/files\/2015\/09\/11002426096_f7781e23d7_b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2027\" src=\"http:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/folkwaves\/files\/2015\/09\/11002426096_f7781e23d7_b-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"11002426096_f7781e23d7_b\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/folkwaves\/files\/2015\/09\/11002426096_f7781e23d7_b-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/projects.handsupfortrad.scot\/folkwaves\/files\/2015\/09\/11002426096_f7781e23d7_b.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>One of this year\u2019s most in-demand and critically acclaimed Scottish folk acts,\u00a0<strong>RURA will embark upon a 13-date UK tour this weekend<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 their second UK run of 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Having released their second album,\u00a0<em>Despite the Dark,\u00a0<\/em>to unanimous critical acclaim in April,\u00a0<strong>the Glasgow and Edinburgh based five-piece has garnered widespread praise and a wide-reaching following.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Following the album\u2019s release tour, the band went on to visit some 11 festivals this summer, across five countries<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 including the world renowned Cambridge Folk Festival, and Denmark\u2019s T\u00f8nder Festival to an estimated 4,000-strong open-air crowd \u2013 as well as a three-week Canadian tour that culminated at the Winnipeg Folk Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Further summer highlights included flying visits to Malta, Germany and Sweden, as well as the mainstream Belladrum festival, in the Scottish Highlands.<\/p>\n<p>In July, leading world music magazine,\u00a0<em>Songlines<\/em>\u00a0hailed RURA to be\u00a0<strong>\u201cone of the most exciting bands on the Scottish folk scene\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in a five-star review, whilst also selecting this upcoming tour as one of their autumn highlights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The band returns to the UK on September 11<\/strong>, kicking their tour off in Aberdeenshire\u2019s Finzean Hall, and tour until October 3, when the tour will close at Mallaig\u2019s F\u00e8is na Mara festival.\u00a0<strong>Intervening dates see the band visit Orkney to the north, and New Milton, in Hampshire, in the far south<\/strong>. They will also call in to the Ramsbottom Festival, in Greater Manchester, Bury St Edmunds, London, Didcot, Plockton, the Isle of Skye, Aviemore and Findhorn, as well as their adopted home city of Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>Having first come to prominence in 2010, as award winners at Glasgow\u2019s Celtic Connections festival, it is no stretch to say that the band have become a must-see live act, carving out their own path and niche amongst the well-trodden folk scene.<\/p>\n<p>Such wide-ranging appeal comes from a powerhouse mix of masterful instrumentation and songcraft, and so too of musical traditions and contemporary ideas.\u00a0Lead, looping melody lines from fiddler\u00a0<strong>Jack Smedley<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Steven Blake<\/strong>, on Highland pipes and whistle, are bolstered by a punch-packing rhythm section of bodhran and guitar from\u00a0<strong>David Foley\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Adam Brown<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a powerful combination, matched by the earthy honesty of singer-songwriter\u00a0<strong>Adam Holmes<\/strong>\u2019 vocals. With the addition of effects pedals, the quintet far transcends the conventional boundaries of \u201cfolk\u201d music \u2013 and to evidently winning effect.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RURA\u2019s fiddle player, Jack Smedley said:<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve had a fantastic summer, and can\u2019t wait to get back out on tour. Since the release of the album we\u2019ve barely stopped, just a weekend off here and there, between touring and festivals.
