He makes a failed attempt to burn the port of Leith and engages in a battle with a flotilla of merchant ships, escorted by a squadron of navy ships, lead by a well armoured ship called the Serapis near Flamborough Head, on the Yorkshire Coast on the 23rd Sept 1779, resulting in the Serapis being taken and Jones&#8217;s ship being sunk.
