Support for the gig came from Robbie Ward, his whimsical songs brought smiles and laughter, a song in praise of Billy Joel, local references to Forfar, Kirriemuir (the Red Town) and Broughty Ferry echoed the well known bard Michael Marra’s knack of referencing home locality within a song without sounding parochial or cheesy. Robbie’s well crafted songs, introductions, and occasional pause mid song to gather a gentle smile before a humorous line was delivered added to the performance. No surprise then that Robbie’s performance captured new fans and friends.
Blue Rose Code (Ross Wilson had heard Robbie’s set and declared there had been too much laughter), he opened with 2 songs back to back which cleverly broke away from the humour of the opening set and established his own contrasting atmosphere.
There was a magical quality to the Blue Rose Code set that drew the listeners in to the afternoon’s performance. Ross has been compared to John Martyn and Van Morrison these comparisons, are no doubt flattering they are also misleading. His voice is entirely his own, his songs sung with a proud Caledonian spirit, clearly immersed in the music and the moment. The songs were delivered with huge commitment these emotional anthems were simply spellbinding.
In addition to his guitar and voice Ross was backed by the in demand player Iain Sloan on pedal steel and guitar. Ian demonstrated a tasteful restraint on pedal steel which contrasted beautifully with Graham Coe’s driving percussive lines on cello.
It is wonderful that Blue Rose Code continues to perform in small intimate venues given his growing status and profile.
