Birnam and its beautiful surrounding landscape enjoys worldwide recognition as an inspiration to John Everett Millais, Niel Gow, Beatrix Potter and, most famously, William Shakespeare. At the heart of the village is Birnam Arts, a voluntary organisation owned and run by the local community with a mission to promote arts, science, heritage and culture.<\/p>\n
Founded in 1883 as \u2018The Birnam Institute\u2019, Birnam Arts is a vital asset to the area, adding value to the local property market and generating footfall for hotels and food outlets. Indeed we\u2019re often cited as a major reason for young people choosing to remain in the area, and a key factor in new residents deciding to settle in Birnam or Dunkeld.<\/p>\n
In 2001 we built a modern extension to our original Victorian premises, introducing a 220-seater theatre space, gallery, caf\u00e9, gift shop and permanent exhibition to add to our art and dance studios, public library and offices. We\u2019re the focal point for community arts and social activities \u2013 our programme includes exhibitions, music and theatre for all ages, plus facilities for dance, drama, yoga, fine arts and ceramics \u2013 as well as a venue capable of attracting visitors, artists and marquee names from across the globe.<\/p>\n
The health of this flourishing programme depends greatly on the success of the various commercial activities run through Birnam Arts\u2019 trading company Birnam I. Ltd – cafe, conferences, events, parties and gift shop \u2013 and on grant support from Creative Scotland and others. Sponsorship of our brochure and of specific events is income stream we are keen to develop, and an area where the new Arts Development & Marketing Officer can make an important contribution.<\/p>\n
This summer our programme features top-notch stand-up from Phill Jupitus (and another big name to be announced!); music acts as diverse as Chris Difford (of Squeeze), the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and Les Fils Canouche; cutting edge contemporary drama from Vanishing Point, Horsehead, and Perth Theatre; an inventive production of \u2018Much Ado About Nothing\u2019 and a performance of Verdi\u2019s opera \u2018Macbeth\u2019. The latter has a particular resonance in Birnam, of course, and our historic link to the great play will be a key element of our arts development strategy over the next few years.<\/p>\n
