Employing a mix of practical exercises and critical reflection, this introductory weekend course provides an overview of fundamental techniques for recording and editing voice, location and foley sounds for film and art installations using industry standard software and popular, high quality microphones and portable recording devices including recording direct to camera.<\/p>\n
Topics include properties of sound, microphone selection and placement, gain structure, effective planning, boom operation, noise limiting and reduction, sound editing, sound dynamics, sound processing and spatial effects, editing sound to picture. Computer experience is required.<\/p>\n

\nMic type – Dynamic, Condenser, Lavalier, Shotgun, Boundary, Stereo, Binaural
\nPolar Patterns -Omni, Cardoid, Attenuated, Others<\/p>\n
Practical Microphone Placement and Technique
\nCritical distance, Proximity effect, Shielding, simple acoustic treatments, filtering
\nLavalier Mic – Positioning, preventing distortion & rustles
\nBooming – Positioning, preventing mic bumps
\nStereo Mics – Phase issues<\/p>\n
Editing Techniques (fades, looping)
\nBuilding a mix
\nBasic sound processing, noise reduction and dynamics (channel strips, EQ and compression)
\nInsert effects (modulation, filtering, distortion!!!!)
\nSend effects (delay, reverb)
\nAutomation (of volume, panning etc)
\nBussing (sending signals to multiple fx)
\nMastering effects (limiting)
