We asked them the following questions.
Tell us more about yourself
The Cheyne Gang is a community singing group for people with chronic respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis and asthma. We have 3 groups running. One in North Edinburgh, one in South Edinburgh and one in South West Edinburgh. They are held once a fortnight. The main focus of the groups is the improvement of the respiratory health of our members with breathing exercises and singing, however it also benefits our members general well being and is great fun!
How long have you been together?
The Cheyne Gang has been running for almost 4 years. It was started by a group of 3 Practice Nurses as a research project to assess the benefits of singing on lung health. The original group had 8 members. We now have 3 groups and over 40 members. We are a registered charity. We do some of our own fundraising but have also managed to secure small pots of funding from various sources.
What have you got planned for the next year?
We have an exciting year ahead. We hope to start a 4th group and we have also developed a training course for musicians who are interested in starting similar groups. The training course will be presented as a residential course in October and we had over 30 applicants for it.
What has been the highlight of your group’s journey thus far?
There has been many many highlights. We have been lucky enough to have been invited along to various organisations to do sing a longs which the members love. We love to get people up and singing! We have made a promotional DVD which we hope to send out to local GP practices etc. We recently developed a website and also have Facebook and Twitter followers. Our members have become great friends and enjoy spending time together. They have all benefited greatly with regards to their health but also socially.
How does it feel to be nominated in this category?
Amazing!! We are very honoured to have been nominated. We are very proud of our members and what they have achieved.
