We asked them the following questions.
Tell us more about the choir
The group comprises 10 teenage girls, including 5 who receive individual singing lessons from myself, Fiona Macdonald. The ages range from 12 to 17 and they have been singing as a group since September 2016.
They entered two competitions at this year’s Mid Argyll Music Festival and won an Honours Award and a Distinction, coming first in the Intermediate Choirs category.
How long has the choir been singing together?
I previously had 7 of the girls in a larger choir, Mid Argyll Youth Chorus, which included young people from 9 to 18, but in June 2016 the younger group was taken over by new leaders and the older group became B Natural.
In their previous activities as Youth Chorus, the children gave regular community concerts, staged many shows, including Oliver!, Alice the Musical and A Christmas Carol; and competed in Music Festivals in Mid Argyll and The Highlands and Islands. The children sing solos, duets and choral items and have gained a very good reputation in Argyllshire. In 2015, a group was selected to sing during the Young Scot Awards presentation.
What has the choir got planned for the next year?
Since this particular blend of voices is a relatively new ensemble, we are taking our time to develop teamwork and a mutually supportive ethos, and over the next 12 months we hope to entertain at many community events, including MAMA Fest, compete in Music Festivals in Mid Argyll, Highlands and Islands and Glasgow, and the group as a whole is planning to support Mid Argyll Musical Society in their forthcoming production of Me and My Girl.
What has been the highlight of your journey thus far?
The highlight for this group, still in its first year, has been the very positive response from audience and adjudicators at the recent Mid Argyll Music Festival, who commended them on their “high standard of ensemble work.”
But, more importantly for them and myself, is the high degree of community support and encouragement from the people of Argyll.
How does it feel to be nominated in this category?
I am completely delighted, as are the girls, and the best thing about it is that members of our own community thought highly enough to nominate us.
I actually voted for our local community choir, Bar None, and their totally inspiring and gifted young leader, Stephen Povey but never thought anyone was voting for B Natural!!
